Some of you may remember, the Indoor Garden City Market, situated in Sockburn. Some of you will have heard positive things about it, and others of you will have heard negative things, but that was then and this is now!

I was a stallholder at the market along with my good friend Judy, and like many of the stallholders at the time we were surprised, and disappointed at the sudden and abrupt closure of the market. I for one could not believe that something with so much potential could be allowed to simply disappear, something had to be done, and now we're doing it!

The Garden City Market is now under new ownership. We, Judy and myself decided to resurrect it and grow it to its full potential, but to do that we need stallholders. We hope to bring back as many of the previous stallholder's plus we'd like some new ones.

Within the warehouse, each stallholder will be 'housed' beneath a snowy white gazebo 3m x 3m square. For those of you who have a white gazebo languishing at home, if you want to bring it you can otherwise we will supply one.

Another plus of using our market is that at the end of the day there is no need to pack up and move your goodies out. If you sign up for the weekends, Saturday's and Sunday's, then you can leave your stall as is and it will be ready and waiting for you to start selling again the following weekend!

The market will be open every weekend, and of course it won't matter if its cold or raining because you will be inside where it will be warm, and clean, and dry. The hours will be 9.00am to 4.00pm.

(Q) And what will be sold at this market?
(A) Handcrafted items and supplies (if relevant) plus anything practical, NZ made and of good quality.

Be they pickles, jams, cakes, breads, toys, baby clothes, soft furnishings, fabrics, wooden items, jewellery, cards, model trains etc, garden tools or products, you name it. If it is handcrafted, NZ made and of good quality then we would love you to sell it at our market.

There will be antique's, and quality bric-a-brac, but no cheap imported items. Riccarton Market has its place in Christchurch and we are not in competition with them in any way whatsover. We are inviting stallholder's with quality handcrafted goodies to join us, to make available once again many of the quality handcrafted items that disappeared at the time of the earthquakes.

To sum up, the following is what we offer:

  • Parking close to the building.

  • A white gazebo 3m x 6m which will house two stallholder's in a warm, dry, environment.

  • Eftpos.

  • For customer's/stallholder's needing cash out, there will NOT be a $3 fee per transaction. I've never been able to get my head around the need for a fee for such an easy exercise!

  • Market hours are 9.00am to 4.00pm Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Casual stallholders are also welcome but will need to accept any available space.

  • Cost of a stall is $80 which cover's the entire weekend. So, $50 per day if you are a casual.

  • There is no need for permanent stallholders to pack up at the end of trading, stall can remain as is for future trading.

  • Casual stallholders will need to pack up at the end of their day.

  • Later on, for those stallholder's that wish to become permanent, we will ask them to sign up at three monthly intervals. This will ensure that they retain their site, and also benefit from a discount.

  • Security being essential, the building is alarmed and monitored by Code 9 Security
